John Maxwell "Winning the People" - 1

p. 119

The reason for such breakdowns are many, but the cause that outweighs all others is broke trust.

Dictionary: "firm belief or confidence in the honesty, integrity, reliability, justice...etc.

But are there other ways that a person can break trust?
Are there things people can do to make a relationship unworthy of trust?

Can we build mutual trust?

p. 124
Warren Bennis says,"Integrity is the basis of trust, which is not so much an ingredient of leadership as it is a product.

It is the one quality that cannot be acquired, but must be earned.

p. 125
Developing trust is like constructing a building. It takes time, and it must be done one piece at a time. As in construction, it's much quicker and easier to tear something down than it is to build it up. But if the foundation is strong, there is a good chance that what is built upon it will stand.

p. 125
Trust is the height of any relationship when two people trust each other completely, the relationship can grow to a level of friendship that is as rewarding as anything in life.

*Writer and Chaplin to Queen Victoria, Charles Kingsley said, "A blessed thing it is for any man or woman to have a friend, one human soul whom we can trust utterly, who knows the best and worst of us, and who loves us in spite of all our faults."

If you're not honest with yourself, you'll not be capable of honesty with others.

Self-deception is the enemy of relationships. It also undermines personal growth. If a person does not admit his short-comings, he cannot improve them.

- Are you honest with yourself about how you live your life?
- Is your character solid?
- Does your yes mean yes and your no mean no?
- Do you follow through with your commitments?
- Don't ask others to put their confidence in you if you believe you many betray it.

Work on your character first, then your relationships.

Don't believe that he will avoid lying to you whenever it is convenient.

Trust works like a bank account.

All About Me

“I asked God for strength that I might achieve. I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey. I asked for health that I might do greater things. I was given infirmity that I might do better things. I asked for riches that I might be happy. I was given poverty that I might be wise. I asked for power that I might have the praise of men. I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God. I asked for all things that I might enjoy life. I was given life that I might enjoy all things. I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I hoped for. Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered. I am, among all men, most richly blessed.”
